Attractions at Mainland Tropical Fish Farm - Arapimas
Common name: Arapimas
Origin: Its origin can be traced back to South America and is often captured primarily by handheld nets, by spear fishing for local consumption. It is perhaps the largest of the strictly freshwater fish in the world, reportedly with a maximum length of up to 4.5 m and weight up to 200 kg. Consequently, large arapaimas of more than 2 m are seldom found in the wild today.Diet: This species feeds on fishes and small animals like monkeys.
Mainland Ah Ma Says: Currently we have a few Arapaimas at the farm for the public to view. Our largest Arapaima is currently of 2m long and weighs close to 100kgs. It has been with us for over 20yrs and we started rearing it when it’ was only 20cm! The more amazing fact is that they actually don’t have teeth, they simply swallow their prey whole! Enjoy their spectacular feeding display by feeding the Arapaima! (S$4 per pack can be purchased from the counter.)
